It’s All Right Here
Licking County makes a strong claim for center of the known universe this weekend, not that many of us didn’t already know that.
National Trail Raceway, west of Hebron on Rt. 40, hosts the single biggest gathering we hold through the year, the Pontiac Springnationals. If you’re not familiar with this event, it is drag racing with two cars and drivers surrounded by tens of thousands of fans trying, and failing, to scream louder than the roar of the nitro fueled engines.
Over 100,000 people come to the area over this weekend, so if you’re wondering about why there are no hotel rooms available, there you go. And some of the your fellow drivers may be oddly quick off the green light at intersections, so stay alert.
Smaller, but one of the largest gatherings of clowns anywhere – no, not Congress in session – ClownTown is at OSU-Newark mostly, and downtown Newark Saturday afternoon, where their traditional ClownTown parade at 4 pm intersects with the wrap-up of the United Methodist churches "Festival of Sharing," on the Courthouse Square all day. Not all Methodist clergy are clowns, but Bob Beyer is, and Jacksontown knows it!
Jacktown and many other Methodist congregations from around the county will have a series of events that promote support of the food pantry networks they share in, with fun and food for you, too.
When dozens or even hundreds of clowns mix with hundreds of Methodists, anything could happen, but we know the kids will have a great time.
Get them cleared away, and Sunday afternoon sees the Newark square filled with hundreds of barbershoppers and their fans, with their annual concert at the Midland Theater. Gospel meets close harmonies (a natural match, when you think about it) and singers from all over central Ohio.
All too much activity? Don’t flee east, where Coshocton and Roscoe Village host their annual Dulcimer Festival all weekend; the Lovely Wife played in this once, and we always wish we could get back there. Hundreds always do, no excuses, and the finest lap, mountain, and hammered dulcimer players from up and down the Appalachians gather. You can buy one there, too.
Nope? If you run west, you’ll run into the "Susan Komen Race For the Cure" in downtown Columbus, a breast cancer fundraiser which attracts thousands of runners and their families.
This is a big, big weekend wherever you turn; watch the traffic, don’t jump off the curb when the lights change, and join in the activity somewhere. It’s all right here, nearby!
